On the theory of naural masers

Abstract

A short review of some selected topics of the theory of astrophysical masers is presented. After some critical remarks about the two commonly used simplified descriptions of kinetics of the maser level populations, two nonlinear effects studied with these descriptions are considered: the cross-relaxation mechanisms of Goldreich-Kwan and of Elitzur, and the maser modes interaction in disk-like masers. The results of a qualitative analysis and a numerical simulation of possible gas-dynamical effects due to “negative” radiative pressure in strong masers are also mentioned.
