Advising someone seems easy to do but, like any human behavior, advice-giving requires numerous and elaborate mechanisms. The advice-giver must have a good understanding of the needs of the user, be able to solve the problem or answer the request of the user, and finally to explain the presented solution. In ESPRIT project Esteam-316, we developed an advice-giving system for financial investment. In this paper we give an overview of the entire project (which ended in 1989) and a more detailed presentation of the dialogue management component. We put particular emphasis on the data structures used and on the use of planning mechanisms in conducting the dialogue.
