Abstract.

New observational techniques and theoretical ideas are enabling us to find black holes and measure their masses with increasing precision, and we may soon be able to measure black hole spins. We are now in a position to study the formation and demography of black holes, and to develop a deeper understanding of how they interact with their environments.
