Abstract
The tropical coastal environment has undergone rapid changes in recent times with the introduction of aquaculture to meet the rising demand for fish products and to supply nutritional requirement of growing population. The major concern in these changes is the way that natural habitats have been extensively cleared and converted to shrimp farming and agriculture and in recent times agriculture into aquaculture. This is driven by high demand for aquaculture products in global markets and, together with technological advances, has fuelled rapid expansion. These rapid and generally unplanned changes in the coastal areas have provoked conflicts between agriculture and shrimp farming and further resulted in degradation of land and water. This necessitates integrated management of coastal zone and proper regulations to deal with the conflicts and land use change. This chapter deals with the trend in land use change and its associated problems and approaches to manage agriculture-aquaculture conflicts aimed at combined production and resource conservation in the tropical coastal areas.
