Abstract
Brain parasitic diseases include neurocysticercosis, hydatid disease, toxoplasmosis, schistosomiasis, cerebral paragonimiasis, and others. In the past, the diagnosis of diseases mainly relied on clinical manifestations and laboratory tests. X-ray is unable to provide a correct diagnosis. Fortunately, owing to the development of imaging techniques, especially the widespread application of computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), it is possible to make the diagnosis of neuroparasitic diseases. CT and MRI can provide high-resolution sectional images. The characteristics of MRI are multiple plane, multiparameter imaging, and high-resolution images. New MRI techniques such as diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI), perfusion-weighted imaging (PWI), and magnetic resonance spectroscopy (MRS) can show pathophysiological changes in the brain at the molecular, blood hemodynamic, and metabolic levels with precise location and high diagnostic accuracy.
