Abstract
It is almost a quarter century since Bauman made this observation, but his perspective remains alarmingly salient: the spectre of uncertainty unsettles our times in ways that have deep implications for young people and for the sociologies of education and youth. We have been researching and writing about young people’s lives, both together and separately, for the last decade. Over this time, we have seen the global escalation of an environment of volatility, uncertainty, complexity and ambiguity. These concepts are popularly collected under the acronym VUCA, but this term is too closely linked to the military and business sectors to suit our purposes. Instead, we use the term ‘uncertainty’ across this book to represent this collection of forces and locate them within a wider social, economic and political context.
