Abstract

This chapter particularly focuses on the role of women in contemporary China. Kai, as the fourth daughter, grew up with three younger boys, whom she was expected to look after when she was not at school. As Kai was still living at home after Chun married, she observed the problems facing a young wife as she came to live with the family. Kai and Lan helped each other as they sought to adapt to family traditions in a modernizing China. After her own marriage, Kai became more concerned about the issues of women in society and became the chair of the Countryside Women’s Federation. In this role, she was actively concerned about the difficulties facing many women in the countryside and also the left-behind children.

Notes

  1. 1.

In terms of “The China Language Situation Report (2006)”, released by the Ministry of Education in 2007, this is one of the 171 new words in Chinese. It refers to a woman who is generally considered over marriageable age.

  2. 2.

The Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) is one of the important organizations of the Chinese political situation. At the Conference, the Communist Party of China (CCP) has about two-thirds of the seats. Other members are drawn from the United Front parties allied with the (CCP) and from independent members who are not members of any Party. The Conference is intended to be more representative and be composed of a broader range of people than is typical of a government office in the People’s Republic of China.
