Severe Asthma

Abstract

It is always important to provide a proper education and to build a partnership in the management of severe asthma. Clinical outcomes of severe asthma could be very dependent on non-pharmacological management such as education and partnership. Inhaler technique and adherence are the key factors of the successful management in severe asthma. Understanding that severe asthma is a chronic inflammatory airway disease would help maintain the regular medications and management. A written action plan is a very important strategy in self-management and should be provided to patients with severe asthma. Environmental factors such as inhalant allergens, smoking, air pollution, respiratory infections, and obesity can aggravate severe asthma and should be avoided appropriately. Immunization against respiratory infections is recommended. Comorbid conditions should be considered in the management of severe asthma. Future directions of non-pharmacological management in severe asthma are also discussed.
