Abstract

Granulomas induced by carrageenin have been shown to contain macrophages which persist at the sites of inflammation for prolonged periods. There has been extensive study on the pathology and biology of granuloma induction, progression and resolution, but no work has so far been reported on the functional characteristics of the exudate found in such lesions. We have shown in this study that exudate obtained from 10 days carrageenin granuloma exhibit certain effects on cells in vitro. Resting peritoneal cells when cultured in the presence of 50% exudate showed the following:

  1. (1)

The cells synthesised a fibrin-like mesh on which they spread extensively.

  2. (2)

Such cells divide at a higher rate than the controls.

  3. (3)

They also release more cytoplasmic enzyme than the controls.

  4. (4)

The above phenomena were not observed using heated chronic exudate (56°Cfor 1h).
