Abstract
Disturbances of gastrointestinal motility are frequently associated with infectious diseases. In the ileum of anaesthetized rabbits, enterotoxigenic strains of Escherichia coli have induced a peculiar pattern of motility with bursts of spikes rapidly propagated aborally (1). Recently in rats it has been shown that migrating myoelectric complexes are disrupted by administration of E. coli enterotoxin (2). Lipopolysaccharide endotoxin of E. coli is known to induce fever with inhibition of gastric motility and diarrhoea in several mammalian species (3). Disturbances such as arterial hypotension and hypoglycaemia induced by E. coli endotoxin in rats would involve opiate receptors since they are blocked by naloxone (4,5). A central mediation of these effects may be possible since small doses of endotoxin are able to increase the secretion of β endorphin in sheep (6).
