Abstract

The Infrared Space Observatory (ISO) will provide astronomers with unique facilities for making imaging, spectroscopic, photometric and Polarimetric observations at infrared wavelengths (2.5 – 200 µm) for a period of at least 18 months. Two-thirds of ISO’s observing time will be available to the astronomical community via the traditional route of submission of proposals. Its 60-cm diameter cryogenically-cooled telescope will be equipped with a suite of four complementary and versatile instruments, currently being developed by consortia of scientific institutes. ISO is a fully approved and funded project of the European Space Agency (ESA) with a foreseen launch date of May 1993.
