Agricultural Labor and Technological Change in the Syrian Arab Republic

  • Chapter
Labor and Rainfed Agriculture in West Asia and North Africa

Abstract

The Syrian Arab Republic is one of the major agricultural countries of the Arab World. The Euphrates and other rivers and oases support irrigated production, over 5 million ha are under rainfed crops, and extensive low-rainfall pastures support small ruminant production. The wet coastal region lies between the sea and the mountains which run from north to south parallel to the sea, with the agricultural plains of Damascus, Homs, Hama, Aleppo, Hassakeh, and Dara’a to the east. The desert region consists of the plains to the southeast on the Jordanian and Iraqi borders (Figure 1). The climate is typically Mediterranean with a mean annual rainfall of about 300 mm in the agricultural plains, and higher levels to the west of the mountains (Saki 1984)
