Summary

A radar network to cover the State of São Paulo, Brazil, was in consideration since the pioneer efforts in radar meteorology in the country were developed in the middle 70’s with the operation of a radar at Bauru, in the central area of the State, in the context of the so denominated RADASP (Radar in São Paulo) Project. The network was planned for the second phase of the Project - RADASP II - which began in 1982. The configuration of the network anticipates the installation of three radars to cover the State, two of them are already in operation in the central (Bauru) and eastern (Ponte Nova) regions of the State while the western radar siting and acquisition is in the planning phase. Data from the radars will converge to a central computing facility at Bauru where composite rainfall maps, integration with satellite imagery and nowcasting will be executed. Research activities related to the network are being developed focusing observations at the overlapping areas and nowcasting techniques for the whole coverage region. The network is supposed to play a major role in the context of a new project for the implementation of a meteorological system recently proposed for the State. Estimates about the potential benefits to be derived from the network from such important sectors like agriculture, water resources, building industry, water resources, and civil defense indicate reaping of high dividends. The State network program and the prospects for a nation-wide system based on that network are considered in this paper.
