Abstract
Bone and cartilage have been transplanted as tissues for almost one hundred years. During much of this time, these tissues were seldom modified following removal from the donor and transplantation into the recipient. Advances were made in surgical technique as well as in methods of storage of the tissues, but few advances were made in manipulating the tissues in order to improve incorporation or function. In the past few years, biochemical advances have resulted in modification of these tissues which has produced a promising future in their transplantation. This paper will review bone and cartilage transplantation through historical, current, and future perspectives.
