Samenvatting
Hartfalen (decompensatio cordis) is een klinisch syndroom dat wordt gekenmerkt door een tekortschietende pompwerking van het hart, hetgeen leidt tot een complex van klachten en verschijnselen. De verbeterde behandeling van diverse hartziekten (myocardinfarct, aangeboren hartafwijkingen) heeft weliswaar geleid tot een betere overleving van patiënten met deze ziekten, maar heeft ook tot gevolg gehad dat de prevalentie van hartfalen sterk toegenomen is. De prognose van patiënten met hartfalen is niet goed en het ziektebeloop wordt gekenmerkt door frequente episoden met een toename van klachten waarvoor veelvuldige ziekenhuisopnamen noodzakelijk zijn.
