Als Angebot von Paketdiensten sind Dienstleistungsgarantien bereits seit langem präsent. Dem Einlieferer eines Paketes wird hier die pünktliche Zustellung innerhalb eines fest definierten Zeitraumes zugesagt. Kann der Zusteller dieses Versprechen nicht einhalten, so ist die Lieferung für den Kunden kostenlos. In anderen Dienstleistungsbereichen in Deutschland etabliert sich dieses in den USA bereits weit verbreitete Instrument allerdings nur sehr zögerlich. Dies liegt zum einen an der Skepsis vieler Dienstleistungsanbieter, die glauben, dass eine Dienstleistungsgarantie zu opportunistischem Verhalten auf Seiten der Kunden verleite, da nur schwer zu ermitteln sei, ob ein Garantiefall auch wirklich eingetreten ist. Auf der anderen Seite z ögern auch Konsumenten, den Garantieversprechen eines Dienstleistungsanbieters Glauben zu schenken. Zudem galt in Praxis und Wissenschaft aufgrund der konstitutiven Merkmale von Dienstleistungen wie der Intangibilität oder Integrativität die Gewährung oder die Garantierung einer bestimmten Qualität, beispielsweise des Leistungsergebnisses, lange Zeit als unm öglich: “For years, managers have held that service can’t be guaranteed” (Maher 1992, S. 22).
