Recent Advances in Stored Product Protection

Abstract

The use of synthetic chemical insecticides for the control of stored product insects and mites is under threat due to consumer pressure, changes in legislation affecting product availability and the development of insecticide resistance. Novel control methods have been investigated and in the past decade advances have been made in the development and use of biopesticides for stored product insects and mites control. This chapter examines recent research on microbial biopesticides (Bacillus thuringiensis, entomopathogenic fungi, baculoviruses, protozoa and entomopathogenic nematodes) for the control of stored product insects and mites. Research to examine the potential to enhance the efficacy of microbial biological control agents and compatibility with other control measures is considered. Finally, the likely future direction and opportunities for research in this area are discussed.
