Zusammenfassung

Intensivmedizin kann durch apparativen Einsatz viele Menschenleben retten. Auch wenn der medizinische Fortschritt viel ermöglicht, führen diverse klinische Situationen dazu, dass das Sterben unvermeidlich ist. Insbesondere die Beatmungstherapie kann ethische Konflikte bei Patienten, Angehörigen und dem Behandlungsteam auslösen. Relevante ethische Aspekte in sogenannten „End-of-life-Situationen“ werden in diesem Kapitel dargelegt.
