Er entwickelte Methoden der Blutgas- und Säure-Basen-Analytik (Säure-Basen-Stoffwechsel) sowie in Zusammenarbeit mit der Firma Radiometer den ersten kompakten Blutgasanalysator (Blutgasanalyse). Astrup wurde im Jahr 1981 mit der Scherer-Medaille der Deutschen Gesellschaft für Klinische Chemie ausgezeichnet.
