FormalPara DefinitionKathode (griech. kathodos = abwärts) ist die Bezeichnung für die negativ geladene Elektrode einer elektrolytischen Zelle, durch die der Strom (Elektronen) in den Elektrolyten austritt.
FormalPara BeschreibungIn einer Elektrolytlösung wandern Kationen (positiv geladene Ionen) zur Kathode. Sie nehmen dort Elektronen auf und werden reduziert (ihre Oxidationszahl wird erniedrigt). Die Kathode ist der Gegenpol zur positiv geladenen Anode. Beide werden unter dem Begriff Elektroden zusammengefasst.
