Zusammenfassung
Der hydrostatische Druck, eine Auswirkung des Gewichts und der sehr geringen Zusammendrückbarkeit der Flüssigkeiten ist in den letzten 150 Jahren in seiner Bedeutung für die Lebewesen sehr verschieden, ja gegensätzlich beurteilt worden. Dies wird uns besonders deutlich, wenn wir bei Wywille Thomson in seinem bekannten Buche: “The Depth of the Sea” (1873) lesen, er habe in seiner Jugend die sonderbare Vorstellung vertreten, das Meerwasser sei infolge des Druckes mit zunehmender Tiefe immer schwerer und schwerer, so daß selbst abgesunkene Goldstücke nicht mehr den Boden erreichten und „zusammen mit Kanonenkugeln“ in der Tiefe eine Art „falschen Seebodens“ bildeten, „unter welchem das ruhige, klare Ozeanwasser läge, das schwerer sei als geschmolzenes Gold“.
