Abstract
Farming in different areas of world varies with respect to climate, crops, animals tended and chemicals used. Farmers and farm workers are exposed to numerous skin irritants and allergens, including chemicals, animal dander, flours, other organic dusts, plants, zoonotic infections and sunlight. Many farmers service their own machinery and do construction work. Environmental factors such as temperature, humidity and frequent washing can cause skin problems and change the susceptibility of the skin to irritants and allergens. Systematic registering of farmers’ work-related diseases is done only in few countries. In the U.S., two-thirds of occupational diseases in agriculture reported between 1973 and 1984 were skin diseases (Mathias and Morrison 1988). In California, the highest rates of occupational skin diseases have been in farm workers (Mathias 1989).
