Abstract
Starting point for this thesis was the need for a compact teaching-learning arrangement that enables students to develop central statistical concepts in a limited number of lessons (Chapter 1). This lead to an investigation into the normative aims of mathematics and statistics education in order to identify the concepts learners need to develop (Chapter 2). Drawing on the framework of mathematical literacy, two sides of mathematical literacy were identified (Section 2.1).
