Abstract

The object of this interchapter is to illustrate the preceding remarks about Gauss’s style by means of a paragraph-by-paragraph summary of Sect. VII of Disqu. Arithm. Section VII is a coherent and nearly self-contained essay which was conceived as one of the earliest parts of Disqu. Arithm., well before the algebraic apparatus of Sect. V was developed. It is 52 pages long in the format of the collected works and devoted to cyclotomy, the theory of the division of the circle; there are (for Gauss) unusually many remarks about further ramifications and consequences of the general theory.
