Abstract
When the choices related to scientific and numerical aspects of an ESM have been done, and when the programming language is chosen and the equations put into programming code, i.e. when the source code of the ESM is written, executable programs have to be generated which can be run on the computing platform available to the scientist. The generation of executables from the source code of an ESM is called the ‘build process’ in the ESM workflow (see Sect. 2). In the following paragraphs, requirements for build systems of ESMs are discussed.
