Pediatric and Neonatal Mechanical Ventilation

Abstract

Acute lung injury (ALI) is characterized by acute pulmonary inflammation causing severe hypoxia and often leading to respiratory failure. About 9 % of mechanically ventilated children admitted to a pediatric intensive care unit (PICU) fulfill the American-European Consensus Criteria (AECC) for ALI (Table 49.1), of which approximately 80 % suffer from its most severe form, i.e., the acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) (Bernard et al. 1994; Bindl et al. 2005; Dahlem et al. 2003). The AECC criteria aim to guide clinicians in their daily judgement of patients and also help researchers to define a homogenous group of patients for investigations.
