One of the principal ongoing tasks of a Belgian Prime Minister, besides trans-Atlantic relations and cooperation with the former colonies in Africa, is of course Europe. I was a member of the European Council of Heads of State and Government for more than twelve years. Initially, due to my age and limited experience, I was very much the newcomer, but I gradually became one of the more familiar fgures, thanks to the central role of Belgium in the process of European integration and my long record of service.
