Heutige Logistik-Systeme und -Netze sind menschgeschaffene („künstliche“) Systeme beträchtlicher Größe und Komplexität. Entwurf, Realisierung, Betrieb komplexer künstlicher Systeme (nicht nur des Logistik-Bereichs) sind ohne Einsatz geeigneter Beschreibungen, geeigneter „Modelle“, kaum vorstellbar: Beschreibungen/Modelle betrachteter Teilsysteme und Systeme sind Grundlage der Kommunikation und kritischen Diskussion von Realisierungs-Vorschlägen und -Varianten, sind Mittel der Fixierung und Weitergabe getroffener Entscheidungen. Zu dieser – wesentlichen – „deskriptiven“ Rolle von Beschreibungen/Modellen gesellt sich ihre Rolle als Ausgangspunkt „analytischer“ Betrachtungen, in deren Rahmen Untersuchungen von Systemeigenschaften (wie etwa von Korrektheit, Effektivität, Effizienz, Kosten, u. a. m.) bereits anhand eines beschreibenden Modells und nicht erst anhand des de fakto realisierten Systems – angestrebt und durchgeführt werden.
