Zusammenfassung
Randall Collins verknüpft in seiner Soziologie erstens eine Konflikttheorie sozialer Prozesse, mit der er an Max Weber anknüpft, zweitens eine Ritualtheorie, die aus zwei Quellen stammt, von Emile Durkheim und von Erving Goffman, und schließlich drittens eine Mikroorientierung, die neben Goffman auf die weitere Tradition des symbolischen Interaktionismus zurückgeht. Aus Webers Soziologie entnimmt Collins die Annahme, dass der Kern der Sozialstruktur aus einer Schichtung entlang von Herrschaftsstrukturen besteht (Collins 1975: 45), von Durkheim die Annahme, dass die gesellschaftliche Solidarität aus einer Situation kollektiver Erregung emergiert, die durch einen gemeinsamen Rhythmus gekennzeichnet ist. Collins verknüpft dies mit der Interaktionssoziologie Goffmans. Dadurch erweitert Collins erstens die Reichweite des Durkheimschen Gedankens: Rituale sind in den alltäglichen face-to-face-Interaktionen stets präsent, sie bilden daher keine besondere Phase gesellschaftlichen Handelns wie bei Durkheim. Zweitens übernimmt er von Goffman die Idee einer situationalen Stratifikation: Interaktionen besitzen einen Aufmerksamkeitsfokus, der das Zentrum der Konversation bildet.
