Mit Cyber-Gendering sind hier summarisch Prozesse der Herstellung von Geschlechterbezügen und Geschlechtsidentitäten bei der Online-Kommunikation gemeint. Online-Kommunikation ist dabei ein Sammelbegriff, der sich auf die Nutzung unterschiedlicher Dienste und Angebote im Internet (und in anderen Computernetzwerken) bezieht, und zwar insbesondere auf:

  1. a)

    Online-Umgebungen für zeitgleiche Interaktion (z.B. Online-Chats, Multi- player-online-Spiele),

  2. b)

    Online-Foren für zeitversetzte Kommunikation (z.B. Mailinglisten, Usenet Newsgroups, Newsboards) sowie

  3. c)

    Web-Angebote (z.B. Suchmaschinen, Online-Portale, Homepages).
