Das antike und christliche Abendland pflegte ein gebrochenes Verhältnis zum Sehen und zum Bild. Stark waren die den Sehsinn begleitenden Verdachtsmomente und Hoffnungen, denn er gestaltete maßgeblich das erkennende, aber auch begehrende Verhältnis des Menschen zur Welt und Transzendenz.
