Die zweite Hälfte des 19. und der Anfang des 20. Jahrhunderts bildeten eine florierende und faszinierende Epoche der St.Galler Geschichte. Das 1881 vom “Kaufmännischen Directorium” in Auftrag gegebene Ölgemälde von Emil Rittmeyer (Abb. 1) zeigt einen St.Galler Textilkaufmann, der stolz seine Ware einer internationalen Kundschaft anpreist.
