Abstract
Chronic Pain leads to much personal, social and occupational impairment. Use of self management techniques can empower patients and lead to much improvement in quality of life. However, patients vary in their levels of motivation to adopt such strategies. The transtheoretical model (TTM) of stages of behavior change can be applied to assess patients’ level of motivation. Each patient can then be offered individualized, stage-specific behavioral and psychological interventions which are more likely to produce positive change.
