Sciatic Nerve

Abstract

The sciatic nerve is the longest and widest nerve in the human body, coursing from the lumbar spine and buttock down to the lower extremity and foot. It is comprised of spinal nerves L4 to S3 of the sacral plexus, ultimately giving rise to the common peroneal (common fibular) nerve and tibial nerve. Due to its size, length and course, it plays an important role in clinical conditions including spinal stenosis and disc herniation associated with radiculopathy, also known as sciatica. Conservative management is first line therapy, with surgical intervention reserved for recalcitrant or complicated cases. Nerve blocks can play an important role in providing symptomatic relief.
