Clinical Algorithms in General Surgery

Abstract

Esophageal cancer is the sixth leading cause of cancer death in the world and carries a 5-year survival rate of only 15–25%. A brief overview of presenting signs and symptoms as well as common manifestations of disease burden is presented. Review of the American Joint Committee on Cancer (AJCC) tumor/node/metastasis (TNM) classification provides insight to imaging and workup. Ultimately, staging dictates survival. Patient factors impacting surgical candidacy greatly impact the care patients diagnosed receive. Ultimately a multidisciplinary approach directs care.
