Abstract
Femoral hernias are groin hernias that protrude through the femoral canal. Imaging can be especially helpful in the diagnosis as they tend to be more difficult to detect on physical exam. Oftentimes, they are diagnosed intraoperatively either incidentally or related to a small bowel obstruction or concurrent hernia. Due to the high risk for incarceration and strangulation, surgical repair is recommended upon diagnosis. When surgical expertise is available, laparoscopic techniques are preferable as it provides direct access to the femoral canal and allows for simultaneous assessment of the contralateral side. Operative technique depends on bowel compromise and surgeon experience and expertise.
