The Rise of Greek Cypriot Nationalism to Hegemony: Agency, Particularities, and Popularization

  • First Online:

Abstract

Katsourides discusses how in the early twentieth century Greek nationalism became a hegemonic ideology in Cyprus. To this end, he looks at three aspects of Greek Cypriot nationalism. First, he examines two main agents/carriers of nationalist ideology in Cyprus: the Church of Cyprus and the rising bourgeoisie. Together they comprised the emerging historic bloc of the Greek Cypriot ruling class, which was often divided in terms of interests and opinions, and reflected on the specific character of Greek Cypriot nationalism. Therefore, a second aspect of Greek Cypriot nationalism that he explores involves its particular characteristics. Finally, he focuses on how nationalism was able to capture a mass audience. Greek Cypriot nationalism is examined in a wider, more global context, but is also considered in the context of colonialism and modernization.
