Opposition to the Process of Language Identification and Standardisation in ‘Limousin Occitan’ and ‘Poitevin-Saintongeais’

Abstract

This chapter aims to outline and explain the main difficulties minority-languages activism encounters in France, where regional languages have been forced into a position of subordination. The chapter provides an overview of the quarrels in Limousin and Aguiaine (Centre-West France) about the issue of language identification in relation to the definitions of ‘dialect’, ‘patois’ and ‘language’ and linked to opposite linguistic representations. The chapter also examines the issue of language revitalisation, which involves different parties that are often in opposition according to their linguistic consciousness, particularly when the use of a graphic system is at stake. One cannot but note the existence of contradictory points of view concerning the defence and promotion of minority languages.

    Patoisants or speakers with a low level of linguistic awareness who self-identify as speakers of patois.

    ‘Aguiaine’ means ‘Aquitaine’ in Poitevin-Saintongeais, but its meaning is restricted to the area between the Loire river and Gironde estuary.

    Eric Nowak (2010) only identifies four criteria distinguishing Poitevin from Saintongeais which can even be put into perspective in the diachronic history of the language.

    Robert thus wrote in 1976: ‘We must speak, read, write; we’ll count orthographic mistakes later; a zero in spelling is better than a zero in speaking. We proclaim talking has priority over spelling […] the authenticity of everyday speech over artificial elaboration, dialectal plurality over linguistic unity, lexical multiplicity over selective castration.’
