Abstract
A Cardiac Surgery Boot Camp was incorporated into the Residency Training Program at the University of Toronto in 2013. This series of sessions was designed based on the work done by the Thoracic Surgery Directors Association (TSDA) and the Joint Council on Thoracic Surgical Education (JCTSE). The basic working model is an explanted porcine heart where the key elements of core cardiac surgical procedures can be modeled and practiced. This chapter describes the set-up and instruments used to emulate, among others, procedures on the aortic valve, mitral valve and coronary arteries. We also describe methods of performance assessment based on the OSATS format. This boot camp remains a highlight of the educational curriculum in our training program and is routinely well received and anticipated by our trainees.
