Abstract

This chapter highlights the accomplishments and historical significance of Gloria Jean Merriex, a noted mathematics teacher in Florida who used culturally relevant pedagogy to increase student achievement. The chapter also offers a critical analysis of the role Gloria Jean Merriex had in contributing to the growth and development of education in Florida’s African American community, especially as it relates to education policies and practices in the latter part of the twentieth-century America through the early twenty-first century in America.
