Abstract

At the beginning of this chapter, I will give a brief historical background concerning the study of the origin of somatoform disorders. After that I intend to explain the definition and the current diagnostic systems ICD-10 and DSM-5 regarding the somatoform disorders, and I will give some important epidemiological data for them. The next paragraph will contain an explanation of these conditions today. The next stage will demonstrate in detail how we make the diagnostic from a psychodynamic point of view according to the current psychodynamic literature (Arbeitskreis PISO, Somatoforme Störungen. Psychodynamisch-Interpersonelle Therapie (PISO). Hogrefe, Göttingen, 2012). Finally, in the section “Therapy”, I will show how I apply the therapy suggestions of that literature in my therapeutical work. Not only will the psychodynamic therapist gain understanding from the text, but it will be of equal benefit to a behavioural therapist, who has an interest in reading about these topics too. Therefore, in that way it is my intention to support the dialogue between behavioural therapy and psychodynamic therapy.
