Abstract
Due to high porosity, large surface-to-volume ratio, film characteristics, and interconnectivity of electrospun fibers, they have shown great potential in wastewater treatment, especially in the heavy metals removal field. The adsorption and filtration are the most common methods to treat the heavy metal-polluted wastewater. Possessing the above characteristics makes electrospun fibers being suitable adsorbents or filters. Adsorption is a relatively static process where adsorbates are adsorbed by the adsorbent via physical and chemical interactions in the contaminated solution. The filtration is a dynamic process that involves the polluted wastewater passing through the filters by its own weight or other forces, to separate the pollutants from the wastewater. However, the filtration of heavy metal ions by the electrospun filters is mainly due to the adsorption processes between the filters and the metal ions, and the electrospun adsorbents are widely studied for the heavy metal remediation. Thus, this chapter’s scope focuses on two areas (electrospun adsorbents and filters for heavy metals removal) and gives representative examples of electrospun adsorbents or filters that are used for the removal of heavy metals.
