Von Willebrand Disease in Pregnancy

Abstract

Von Willebrand disease is the most common bleeding disorder in women. There are three major types—type 1 with low levels of Von Willebrand factor (VWF), type 2 with abnormal VWF, and type 3 with no detectible WVF. Laboratory testing consists of checking factor VIII, VWF antigen, and VWF activity. Much controversy exists over diagnosis of VWD especially in patients with only moderately low levels. Treatment varies by disease type but ranges from desmopressin to use of VWF concentrates. An important feature of VWD in women is that estrogen administration can raise levels.
