Abstract
In addition to their primary, and to most, familiar, role in direct patient care, physicians, by dint of their education, clinical experience, and facility with operating within healthcare systems, have many opportunities for leadership in healthcare organizations. These leadership roles can take many forms, from managing a small solo medical office to leading a large healthcare organization or healthcare-related government agency. This chapter will focus on leadership in general, styles of leadership, and how physicians can be more effective leaders, irrespective of the size of their organizations and their direct spans of control.
