Abstract
Learning surgical skills is the main task for neurosurgery residency training, in which technical errors may result in poor or even devastating consequences. Recently simulation technology has been developed as adjunctive means for neurosurgical training and may provide residents with abilities to acquire surgical skills in a safe environment. Magnetic resonance-guided laser interstitial thermal therapy has been shown to be a minimally invasive and effective alternative treatment for selected patients with mesial temporal lobe epilepsy. However, high levels of functioning in the patients with temporal lobe epilepsy and esoteric interventions of laser ablation procedures performed in fewer medical centers have prevented hands-on training for surgeons. Moreover, working-hour restrictions of neurosurgery residency makes it necessary to deliver high-quality and time-effective training to surgeons in less time while ensuring optimal patient outcomes. This chapter focuses on the simulation of laser ablation amygdalo-hippocampectomy for treatment of mesial temporal lobe epilepsy.
