Abstract
In his book entitled Buddhism and Buddhists in Japan, Robert Cornell Armstrong made the following comment about Japanese Buddhist priests in the 1920s:
The statement is often made, and with good reason, that the great majority of modern Buddhist priests, who have inherited their temples and to whom their service represents a means of livelihood, do not really believe in their own religion. (Armstrong 1927, pp. 22–23)
