National Forest Inventories

Abstract

The necessity to have homogenous and objective forest statistics for decision making at national level provided the impetus for undertaking the first forest inventory on a national scale in Spain (NFI1) between 1965 and 1974. This first National Forest Inventory (NFI), based on aerial photograph interpretation, set the foundations for subsequent NFIs. Although the initial objective was to have a 10 year cycle between NFIs, due to circumstances related to the national infrastructure, the second National Forest Inventory (NFI2) did not commence until 1986.
