Cutaneous Aging and Dermatosis in Geriatric Patients

Abstract

The world population of older adults is increasing significantly. As a consequence, by the year 2050 one-fifth of the global population will be older than 65 years. In general, the female outlives the male in humans and most other species. Aging can be understood as a natural process of gradual reduction in the functional reserve of individuals, known as senescence, which under normal conditions does not usually cause problems. Skin aging occurs through two distinct phenomena: the intrinsic and extrinsic. Intrinsic aging stems from the chronological action on the skin and surrounding tissues and is inevitable in everyone as they get older. Extrinsic aging is due to lifestyle and environmental factors, particularly chronic sun exposure (photoaging) and smoking. There is no exclusive dermatosis of the elderly, although there are some dermatoses that tend to be more prevalent in this population.

Extracellular matrix

Extracellular matrix (ECM) macromolecules are important for creating the cellular environments required during development and morphogenesis.

G1 phase cellular growth

The first growth period of the cell cycle, during interphase, in which the cell grows and cytoplasmic organelles are replicated.

Glycosaminoglycans

Structures from the extracellular matrix responsible for maintaining and supporting collagen, elastin, and turgidity (bounce) in the cellular spaces and keeping protein fibers in balance.

Metalloproteinases

Metalloproteinases or matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs), collectively called matrixins, are proteinases that participate in ECM degradation. These proteinases play a central role in many biological processes, such as embryogenesis, normal tissue remodeling, wound healing, and angiogenesis, and in diseases such as atheroma, arthritis, cancer, and tissue ulceration.

S1 phase cellular growth

Part of the cell cycle in which DNA is replicated, occurring between G1 phase and G2 phase.

Tachyphylaxis

The continued or repeated exposure to a drug that may lead to a weakened pharmacological response.
