Abstract

The lumbar plexus arises from the ventral rami of L1–L5 nerve roots. It forms within the psoas major muscle. The nerves are divided into three groups based on their relationship to the psoas muscle as they enter the retroperitoneal space. The sacral plexus arises from the ventral rami of L4–S4. It forms in the pelvis anterior to the piriformis muscle.
