Abstract
Negotiation that is transformative in practical, emotional, and psychological ways depends and builds upon relational trust to reach meaningful and sustainable outcomes. This type of negotiation reflects the importance of integrity within and between the negotiating parties and sensitivity to a process that requires a high degree of care and respect for self and others participating in the negotiation. Interaction and interdependence of this sort is not easy to achieve, nor are the elements of respect and accountability always at the forefront of the thinking of those preparing to enter interest-based negotiations. This chapter reasserts the importance of the values and processes of transformative negotiation and, along with respect, emphasizes the concept and practice of dignity as essential to the development of successful and long-lasting negotiated agreements.
